Edited by: Vordan Baszt on 24/06/2007 11:38:12 Asteroids !!! This one may have been suggested already, and I assume it has serious implications for the game engine itself.
Make all asteroids block lines of fire. This would have the effect of:
1. any shots fired while the asteroid was blocking line of sight fail to hit the target and hit the asteroid instead
2. breaking lock for both ships/any ships for which the asteroid blocked their target.
3. ships behind roids do not appear on overview (or scans)of other ships (except for those ships for which the roid doesnt block line of sight of course). I dont like that everything (apart form cloakers of corse)appears in the overview, it makes all encounters much less tactical by that simple fact.
Obviously these features should be applied only to reasonably large asteroids/objects over a certain size.
The breaking lock aspect could be limited, so that if the asteroid was small, once it stops blocking the line of sight re-acquisition time should be automatic and much shorter than if you had to re-establish lock again, but if the duration for which the asteroid blocked the target is sufficiently long, the lock is broken and needs to be re-established as normal.
If this could be made to work it would make all battles occuring around any objects more tactical instantly.
For example:
A warp-scrambled ship could attempt to limp behing an asteroid and attempt to get away.
In big battles damaged ships could try to hide behind roids rather than warp out.
Ships outmached by long ranged opponents could try to even out the odds by putting a roid between them and their opponent, potentially forcing the opponent to approach to closer range.
Ships faced with a target hiding behind a roid would have to use manouvering tactics to surround their target.
A real opportuinty for exciting ambushes. If a bunch of pirates is hiding behind roids in a belt, and a group of ships warps in, not only will the ships warping in not know what sort of force they are facing, but the pirates themselves will have to rely on really good teamwork and a 'spotter' to make them aware of someone warping into the belt and provide info on ship types, etc. Also this would potentially make players wanting to go to low sec belts have to send in a scout party to look at the belt from various angles to make sure its safe - a very exciting opportunity for increase in scouting roles.
I would really love to see something like this implemented.
